GMIF 2009: The Interpretation Lab

Those who come to the GMIF to study the performance of interpretive events will learn from some of the most experienced and successful high school and college coaches in the country.

Students will learn the basic skills of choosing an appropriate piece, cutting it down to fit the suitable time limit, and how to develop characters within the performance framework.

Besides participating in an in-depth lecture series that highlights the important theoretical approaches to performance, students in the Interp curriculum will also observe live forensics performance from the staff. Further, Interpers will also take advantage of the Washington D.C. area by attending performances at the nationally renowned Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

The Lecture Series

The Application Lecture Series offers beginning students a chance to learn how to craft an interpretation on an intellectual, emotional and aesthetic level. Through a series of lectures, presentations and hands on applications students will learn how to choose a piece of literature and transform the written text into a performance.

The
Theory Lecture Series offers the intermediate level student the opportunity to explore a variety of acting methods from Stanislavsky to Moss with the hope that our students will discover how these techniques can be applied to the world in interpretation.

The
Practicum Lecture Series allows performers to explore non-traditional approaches to piece development. Students examine experimental art forms, and alternative viewpoints on the overall perception of speech communication. Innovative theoretical approaches, coupled with their own imaginative interpretations, provide students with an intellectual, creative, and practical approach to creating art.

Don’t Miss It!

In 2006 all Interpers got to attend a live performance of the Reduced Shakespeare Company’s All the Great Books (Abridged) at the Kennedy Center!

In 2007, GMIF students were able to attend a performance of the one-woman show Doin’ Time as well as a live performance of Shear Madness at the Kennedy Center.

This past year, GMIF Interpretation students attended Jerry Springer: The Opera as well as a nightly performance hour, featuring over 10 national championship performances.
